Atascadero homeowners trust us because modern homes contain thousands of dollars of sensitive electronics that deserve real protection. Anthony Orozco built this company on installations that protect what matters. You get surge protection sized for your service, integrated with your panel, and tested before we leave. We pull permits where required, document the installation, and stand behind our work. Every new installation comes with a 2-year workmanship warranty. The dispatch fee is waived when you proceed with the work.

I had to call for an electrician this afternoon as we had the power going off in several rooms of the house. I was given Anthony Orozco's card from another business who happened to be here. Anthony got back with me right away and within 20 minutes he was at my house. It was Friday and after 2pm. He had to replace a circuit breaker in one of our panels. I was so impressed that he was able to come out on a Friday afternoon, complete the work, and be so professional and courteous. I will definitely recommend Good Neighbors Electric to everyone.

I called Good Neighbor Electric in the morning to get a quote for the insulation of my Electric Vehicle (EV)charger. My EV charger requires a 100 AMP circuit and I wasn’t sure if my panel had the capacity for it. Anthony came out to the house that afternoon to check out the electrical panel, EV charger, and site. I received a quote the next day. After obtaining competitive quotes from other companies I found Good Neighbor Electric to be the best price. We scheduled the installation for the following week. Anthony’s people showed up on time and were very professional and courteous. During the installation Anthony came out to inspect and oversee the job. I couldn’t be happier with the installation, my charger looks good on the wall and is working flawlessly. I highly recommend Good Neighbor Electric for your electrical needs and I will be using them in the future.

Needed Tony to help me out with a remodel of my sister's medical office in SLO. We had our time line pushed up and I needed 50 data drops pulled by tomorrow, before insulation and drywall started. Tony got his crew together and saved the day! He ran ~3k' of Cat6 in two trips. Time was of the essence but he still managed to make it neat and presentable. We couldn't be happier with Good Neighbors Electric!

Tony, Skyler, Eli, and Adam were phenomenal! Setting up a big, new 200 Amp panel to replace an ancient 50 Amp panel, and all that goes with that for a 70-year old house, whew!! The team is happy, fast, upbeat, and creative. I believe there's nothing they can't do! New she-shed wired up, garage tricked out, and house safe and sound, thank you Tony and team, you are a wonderful group, we enjoyed every minute. And that's saying a lot when it comes to construction! To top it off, Good Neighbors Electric quoted a very fair price, arranged permitting and inspections, and went the extra mile to accommodate last minute ideas. 😊 Thank you, thank you, we will wholeheartedly refer you to everyone!

I can not say enough good things about this company! Absolutely incredible service, communication, and the work was amazing! The crew came out, replaced my 1965 electric box. They did the permit, they fixed the stucco after pulling the old box out. I would use them over any other electrician out there!

Anthony and his crew were amazing! First of all, he was able to come over the same day I contacted him to see the job and get started on a quote. I’d been given the runaround from other companies, so working with Anthony was like a sweet relief. Job was finished perfectly the following week & they even fixed a couple extra switches that were wired funky by a previous electrician. I will definitely be calling Good Neighbors Electric for all my future needs and recommending them to everyone I know! Thanks again guys!

Our Whole House Surge Protection Service in Atascadero, CA

Surge protection installation begins with evaluating your existing panel. Modern panels with available breaker space accommodate panel-mounted surge protective devices easily. Older panels may need adapters or alternative mounting options. We verify panel compatibility during the estimate and recommend the appropriate device. The protection level matches your home’s needs and the equipment you want to protect.

Surge protective device selection affects both performance and longevity. Type 1 devices install on the line side of the main breaker, providing protection against direct lightning strikes and major utility events. Type 2 devices install on the load side, protecting against surges that pass through or originate within the home. We typically recommend Type 2 devices for residential installations, with Type 1 devices in lightning-prone applications.

Joule rating measures the energy a device can absorb during surge events. Higher joule ratings indicate greater absorption capacity and longer service life. Quality residential surge devices typically have ratings of 40,000 joules or higher. The rating combined with surge current capacity determines how the device performs during major events. We install devices with ratings appropriate for your home and risk profile.

Mounting location within the panel affects performance. The device should mount as close as possible to the main breaker, which minimizes the lead length to the bus bars. Short, straight conductor runs from the device to the bus optimize performance during fast surge events. We follow manufacturer instructions and best practices for mounting.

Indicator lights show the protection status. Most quality surge devices have LED indicators that show when protection is active. After major surge events, the indicators may show that protection is reduced or the device needs replacement. The status indicators allow simple verification of ongoing protection. We point out the indicators during commissioning so you can monitor status.

Layered protection extends the defense throughout your home. The whole house device handles major surges at the panel. Point-of-use surge protectors at sensitive equipment provide additional protection for computers, televisions, and audio equipment. The combination protects against the full range of surge events that affect modern homes. We discuss point-of-use protection options during the estimate.

Connection quality affects long-term reliability. The device terminations must be torqued correctly, with secure contact to the panel bus bars and ground. Loose connections cause poor performance and accelerated wear. We use torque tools to verify proper installation. Cleanup includes packaging removal and panel cover replacement.

Final commissioning verifies the installation works correctly. The device indicators are checked to confirm protection is active. Voltage at the panel is verified normal during installation. Documentation of the installation, including device specifications and warranty information, is provided. Good Neighbors Electric leaves you with surge protection ready to defend your home against the next surge event.

Why Hire A Licensed Electrician For Your Whole House Surge Protection Service

Whole house surge protection involves work in the main electrical panel, which requires professional safety knowledge. The bus bars in panels remain energized even when the main breaker is off, creating shock hazards for anyone without proper training. Licensed electricians understand how to work safely in panels and how to install surge devices correctly. We carry insurance that protects you if something goes wrong on the job. Our work meets the California Electrical Code, which protects your homeowner’s insurance and warranty coverage on the surge device. Good Neighbors Electric brings field experience to surge protection installations across Atascadero. Anthony Orozco trains every electrician on proper panel work and surge device selection. You get a 2-year workmanship warranty, a waived dispatch fee when you proceed, and a team that respects your home throughout the project. Improper surge device installation reduces or eliminates the protection you paid for. Professional installation supports the protection you actually need.

Most Common Whole House Surge Protection Questions

Whole house surge protection defends your home’s electrical system from voltage spikes that damage electronics and appliances. Below are the questions Atascadero homeowners ask most often before scheduling service.

Whole house surge protection costs depend on the device selected and the installation complexity. Quality panel-mounted surge devices represent a moderate investment, with installation labor on top. The total cost is small compared to the value of equipment being protected, which often runs into thousands of dollars in modern homes.

Higher-rated devices with greater joule capacity and surge current handling cost more than basic models. The investment in better protection pays off through longer device life and better performance during major events. We help you understand the trade-offs between protection level and cost during the estimate.

The dispatch fee is waived when you proceed, which lowers the total cost. Financing is available for larger projects that combine surge protection with other electrical work. The 2-year workmanship warranty applies to every installation. Good Neighbors Electric is committed to fair pricing on this important protective equipment.

Whole house surge protectors absorb and divert excess voltage during surge events. The devices contain metal oxide varistors that conduct heavily when voltage exceeds a specific threshold, typically a few hundred volts. The conduction shunts the surge energy to ground rather than letting it pass through to your equipment. The protection happens in microseconds, faster than damage would occur to most equipment.

Major surge sources include utility events, lightning, and switching transients within the home. Utility events happen when transformers fail, lines short, or large loads switch on the grid. Lightning rarely strikes directly but often induces surges in nearby lines. Internal switching from large motors and equipment also creates transients that affect sensitive electronics.

The surge device handles all of these source types within its rated capacity. Major events that exceed the device rating may damage the device itself, which is replaceable. The trade-off is that the device sacrifices itself to protect your equipment, which is far more valuable. Good Neighbors Electric helps you select devices with appropriate capacity for your home’s risk profile.

Surge protection helps with most lightning-related damage but not direct strikes. Direct lightning strikes carry energy levels that exceed the capacity of any surge device. The good news is that direct strikes are rare. Most lightning damage to homes comes from induced surges in utility lines or grounding systems near the strike point.

These induced surges are exactly what whole house surge protection handles. The devices intercept the surge energy before it reaches sensitive equipment. Computers, televisions, refrigerators with electronic controls, HVAC equipment, and many other items in modern homes benefit from this protection. Without protection, lightning-induced surges damage equipment regularly.

For maximum lightning protection, layered approaches work best. Whole house protection at the panel handles most surge energy. Point-of-use surge protectors at sensitive equipment provide additional defense. Lightning rod systems on homes in particularly exposed locations divert direct strikes from the structure. We can discuss the appropriate level of protection for your specific situation.

Surge protector lifespan depends on the surge events the device experiences. Quality devices in low-surge environments can last 10 to 20 years. Devices in areas with frequent surge activity may need replacement sooner. The internal components degrade with each surge event, especially major events that test the device’s full capacity.

Status indicators on quality devices show when protection is reduced or eliminated. Green LEDs typically indicate full protection, while red or absent lights indicate degraded performance. Checking the indicators periodically catches end-of-life conditions before unprotected events occur. We point out the indicators during commissioning.

Major surge events, including direct lightning influence, can damage devices in a single occurrence. The device sacrifices itself protecting your equipment, which is the desired behavior. Replacement after major events restores protection for future surges. Good Neighbors Electric handles replacement quickly when needed.

Layered surge protection works best, with whole house devices handling major events and point-of-use protectors providing additional defense. The combination provides better protection than either alone. Quality surge protective power strips at sensitive equipment add protection without significant cost.

The whole house device handles surge events that originate at the utility or affect the entire home. Point-of-use protectors handle smaller surges that originate within the home from switching events, equipment cycling, and other internal sources. Each layer addresses different threats.

For sensitive equipment like computers, home theater systems, and audio equipment, dedicated power conditioners offer additional benefits beyond basic surge protection. These devices filter line noise, regulate voltage, and provide cleaner power that improves equipment performance. Good Neighbors Electric helps you understand the protection levels and choose what fits your specific equipment and budget.

Most modern panels accommodate whole house surge protection easily. Panels with available breaker space allow standard surge devices that mount in two adjacent breaker spaces. Panels without space may need different installation approaches or panel modifications. We evaluate panel compatibility during the estimate.

Older panels with proprietary breaker mounts may have limited surge device options. Federal Pacific and Zinsco panels, in particular, present challenges for surge device installation. Replacing these panels often makes sense regardless of surge protection because of their inherent safety problems. Surge protection on a new panel installs cleanly.

Smart panels with built-in monitoring sometimes include integrated surge protection. The integration provides surge data along with other electrical monitoring features. We can install standalone or integrated surge protection depending on your panel and preferences. Good Neighbors Electric works with whatever panel you have to deliver appropriate protection.

Surge protection devices use minimal power during normal operation, with no measurable impact on electric bills. The devices monitor voltage continuously but only conduct during actual surge events. The standby power consumption is essentially nothing.

The savings from surge protection come from preventing damage to expensive equipment. Replacing computers, televisions, refrigerators, and HVAC controls after surge damage costs thousands of dollars. The surge protection investment is small compared to a single avoided replacement event. Insurance deductibles also factor in, since covered surge claims still cost something out of pocket.

Some insurance companies offer discounts for homes with whole house surge protection. The discounts may not cover the full installation cost but contribute to the overall value. We provide documentation that supports any insurance discussions you have. Good Neighbors Electric installs surge protection that delivers real value over its service life.

Whole house surge protection installation typically completes in one to two hours. The work includes turning off the main breaker, mounting the device, making connections, and testing the installation. We arrive prepared with the device and tools needed, which keeps the work moving efficiently.

The brief power interruption during installation requires preparation. Refrigerators and freezers stay closed during the work. Electronics that need clean shutdown should be powered off beforehand. The interruption is short enough that most household activities are barely affected. We communicate timing during scheduling.

Inspection is rarely required for surge device installation in existing panels, though local rules vary. We handle any required permits or inspections as part of the project. Good Neighbors Electric makes the installation smooth and efficient. The result is protection that defends your home for years to come.
